Corrections and Removal Policy

Last updated: 12/18/2025

Purpose

This archive website is dedicated to preserving, sharing, and contextualizing public domain and free-use historical images sourced from libraries, museums, government collections, and other open archives. We strive for accuracy, transparency, and respect for source institutions and individuals depicted in these materials.

This policy explains how we handle corrections, attribution updates, and removal requests.

Good-Faith Use of Materials

All images published on this site are believed, in good faith, to be:

  • In the public domain, or
  • Released under a free-use license (e.g., Creative Commons, government works), or
  • Otherwise permitted for reuse by the source archive

Metadata (dates, locations, descriptions, creators, and rights statements) is reproduced from the original source when available. Because historical records can be incomplete or inaccurate, errors may occur.

Requesting a Correction

We welcome corrections that improve the historical accuracy or clarity of our archive.

You may request a correction if you believe there is an error in:

  • Image description or caption
  • Date, location, or subject identification
  • Attribution or source credit
  • Rights or license information

How to Request a Correction

Please email us at themarianasarchive@gmail.com with:

  1. A link to the relevant page on our site
  2. A clear description of the proposed correction
  3. Supporting evidence or source documentation, when available

We will review correction requests in good faith and, when appropriate, update the page with revised information or an editorial note.

Attribution Updates

If you represent an archive, institution, or collection and believe attribution is incomplete or incorrect, we are happy to update credit lines.

Attribution updates do not imply ownership of the image unless copyright status is clearly demonstrated.

Removal Requests

We recognize that some images—while legally permissible to share—may raise concerns related to privacy, cultural sensitivity, or contextual harm.

You may request removal if:

  • You are the source institution and believe the image was published in error
  • The image includes sensitive or distressing content requiring additional context
  • There is a credible claim that the image is not actually public domain or free-use

What is Not Grounds for Removal

  • Discomfort with historical facts alone
  • General dislike of the content
  • Claims of ownership without supporting documentation

How to Request Removal

Please contact themarianasarchive@gmail.com and include:

  1. The URL(s) of the content in question
  2. Your relationship to the material (e.g., rights holder, archive representative)
  3. The reason for the request
  4. Any supporting documentation (if applicable)

We review all removal requests carefully. If a request raises legitimate legal, ethical, or factual concerns, we may:

  • Remove the image
  • Temporarily unpublish the image during review
  • Update context, attribution, or disclaimers

Review Process and Timeline

  • Requests are typically reviewed within 7–14 business days
  • Complex claims may require additional time or consultation
  • We reserve the right to request additional information

Decisions are made at our discretion, guided by historical best practices, applicable law, and ethical archival standards.

No Admission of Liability

Corrections, attribution updates, or removals are made without admission of legal liability and do not constitute acknowledgment of wrongdoing.
